Terza vettura più venduta nella storia dell'automobile, la mitica Renault 4 compirà il prossimo anno la bellezza di 50 anni.

COME UN BLUE JEANS
Frutto di un'idea nata nel 1956 dalla mente di Pierre Dreyfus, la vettura venne presentata con la volontà di essere una "blue jeans" car: versatile, economica, con un nome facile da pronunciare in tutto il mondo e, soprattutto, in grado di adattarsi alle esigenze di un mondo in grande evoluzione.

TRE VERSIONI
Dopo un'incubazione di 5 anni, la prima vettura passeggeri a trazione anteriore venne lanciata al Salone dell'Auto di Parigi nel 1961 in tre versioni: la R3, R4 e R4L, dove la L identificava un allestimento particolarmente lussuoso.

PIU' DI 8 MILIONI
La vettura, grazie ad interni particolarmente spaziosi ed inequivocabilmente caratterizzati dalla leva del cambio a "cloche" posa al centro della plancia è divenuta da subito un grande successo, tanto che in 31 anni di carriera sono state 8.135.424 le unità prodotte.

GIOCAVA D'ANTICIPO
Un successo che è stato la conferma di un progetto in grado di anticipare i tempi e cavalcare l'onda del successo per molti anni ed in paesi completamente diversi l'uno dall'altro: la commercializzazione della R4 da parte di Renault, infatti, è avvenuta anche in Australia, South Africa, Chile, Philippines oltre a tutti i paesi europei.

ANCHE 4x4 E CABRIO
Nel corso della sua commercializzazione la 4 è stata prodotta in diverse versioni, inclusa una Van, una 4x4 ed una Cabriolet. Vi sono state poi alcune varianti sul tema come la Rodeo, la Parisienne (1963), la Safari (1975), la Jogging (1961) e la Sixties nel 1985.

PODIO ALLA DAKAR
Una vettura, la R4, che si è data da fare anche in ambito sportivo: sono numerose, infatti, le partecipazioni al Rallye di Montercarlo oltre che alla Parigi-Dakar, competizione quest'ultima in cui è riuscita ad arrivare anche sul podio.

BYE BYE
A fine carriera la Renault R4 è stata prodotta in una speciale versione "Bye Bye" pur continuando ad essere prodotta fino al 1994 in Slovenia e Marocco, seppur in piccole quantità.

ONE OFF CON MISS SIXTY
Per festeggiare il 50esimo della R4 i vertici Renault stanno pensando a diverse manifestazioni celebrative, tra cui una esposizione itinerante "The Modulo 4 Exibition", la partecipazione al Rallye di Montecarlo storico, la partecipazione al Retromobile Classic Car Show o al 4L International Meeting.

Non mancherà un clamoroso ritorno alle scene con una eccezionale versione "one-off" denominata Renault 4 Miss Sixty: dopo la Twingo la collaborazione con la nota firma della moda viene nuovamente tirata in ballo per esaltare il concetto di blu jeans che è poi il concetto alla base del pensiero che ha spinto Pierre Dreyfus alla sua ideazione.

 

- 1956 Pierre Dreyfus, President of the Régie Nationale des Usines Renault, launches his project for the blue jean car.

- 1959 Prototypes of the future Renault 4 crisscross the roads of the world. From the U.S.A. to Sweden, via Sardinia and Guinea, the test cars are put through their paces in extreme driving conditions.

- 1961 (July 6): The last 4CV rolls out of the Billancourt plant. All of its tooling is dismantled to make room for the assembly lines for the new Renault 4.

- 1961 (August): Presentation of the Renault 4 and the Renault 3 to the press in France's Camargue region.

- 1961 (October): The first public appearance of the new Renault 4 at the Paris Motor Show (Grand Palais).

- 1965 The R4 officially becomes the Renault 4.

- 1966 Launch of Renault's "Les Routes du Monde" operation (ended in 1984).

- 1967 Production reaches almost 370,000 units per year as the Renault 4 becomes France's bestselling French car. September saw the addition of the large aluminium grille.

- 1974 (September): introduction of the plastic grille.

- 1977 Renault 4 sales reach the five-million mark (all versions and body types included). Renault becomes Europe's biggest car manufacturer.

- 1980 The Renault 4 claims third place on the Paris-Dakar Rally in the hands of the Marreau brothers.

- 1985 The threshold of seven million Renault 4 sales is exceeded.

- 1988 The Renault 4 bids farewell to the German market with the "Salü" limited edition (500 units) after 27 years of success and more than 900,000 cars imported. The van version is dropped from the French catalogue.

- 1992 The last 1,000 Renault 4 cars leave the Billancourt plant. The GTL Clan versions will have the distinction of featuring a commemorative plaque on the instrument panel which reads "Bye-Bye". On 3rd December, Renault announces the official end of the Renault 4's career. Only two countries would continue to produce the model after that date (until 1994): Morocco and Slovenia.

Total Renault 4 production units exceeded the 8,130,000 mark.
